<p>1Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2Mary was the one who anointed the Lord with perfume and wiped his feet with her hair; her brother Lazarus was ill. 3So the sisters sent a message to Jesus, &ldquo;Lord, he whom you love is ill.&rdquo; 4But when Jesus heard it, he said, &ldquo;This illness does not lead to death; rather it is for God&rsquo;s glory, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.&rdquo; 5Accordingly, though Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus, 6after having heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was.&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>17&nbsp;When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus[a] had already been in the tomb four days. 18&nbsp;Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, some two miles[b] away, 19&nbsp;and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them about their brother. 20&nbsp;When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, while Mary stayed at home. 21&nbsp;Martha said to Jesus, &ldquo;Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22&nbsp;But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask of him.&rdquo; 23&nbsp;Jesus said to her, &ldquo;Your brother will rise again.&rdquo; 24&nbsp;Martha said to him, &ldquo;I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.&rdquo; 25&nbsp;Jesus said to her, &ldquo;I am the resurrection and the life.[c] Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, 26&nbsp;and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?&rdquo; 27&nbsp;She said to him, &ldquo;Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Messiah,[d] the Son of God, the one coming into the world.&rdquo;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>28&nbsp;When she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary, and told her privately, &ldquo;The Teacher is here and is calling for you.&rdquo; 29&nbsp;And when she heard it, she got up quickly and went to him.30Now Jesus had not yet come to the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him. 31The Jews who were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary get up quickly and go out. They followed her because they thought that she was going to the tomb to weep there. 32When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, &ldquo;Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.&rdquo;33When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. 34He said, &ldquo;Where have you laid him?&rdquo; They said to him, &ldquo;Lord, come and see.&rdquo; 35Jesus began to weep. 36So the Jews said, &ldquo;See how he loved him!&rdquo;&nbsp;</p>
<p>37<span style="line-height: 1.3;">But some of them said, &ldquo;Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?&rdquo; </span>38<span style="line-height: 1.3;">Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. </span>39<span style="line-height: 1.3;">Jesus said, &ldquo;Take away the stone.&rdquo; Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, &ldquo;Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead four days.&rdquo; </span>40<span style="line-height: 1.3;">Jesus said to her, &ldquo;Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?&rdquo; </span>41<span style="line-height: 1.3;">So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upward and said, &ldquo;Father, I thank you for having heard me. </span>42<span style="line-height: 1.3;">I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me.&rdquo;&nbsp;</span></p>
<p>43When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, &ldquo;Lazarus, come out!&rdquo; 44The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, &ldquo;Unbind him, and let him go.&rdquo;</p>
<p>45<span style="line-height: 1.3;">Many of the Jews therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen what Jesus did, believed in him.</span></p>

<p>21When Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered around him; and he was by the sea. 22Then one of the leaders of the synagogue named Jairus came and, when he saw him, fell at his feet 23and begged him repeatedly, &ldquo;My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well, and live.&rdquo;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>24So he went with him. And a large crowd followed him and pressed in on him. 25Now there was a woman who had been suffering from hemorrhages for twelve years. 26She had endured much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had; and she was no better, but rather grew worse. 27She had heard about Jesus, and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, 28for she said, &ldquo;If I but touch his clothes, I will be made well.&rdquo; 29Immediately her hemorrhage stopped; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. 30Immediately aware that power had gone forth from him, Jesus turned about in the crowd and said, &ldquo;Who touched my clothes?&rdquo; 31And his disciples said to him, &ldquo;You see the crowd pressing in on you; how can you say, &lsquo;Who touched me?&rsquo;&rdquo; 32He looked all around to see who had done it. 33But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling, fell down before him, and told him the whole truth. 34He said to her, &ldquo;Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.&rdquo;</p>
<p>&nbsp;35<span style="line-height: 1.3;">While he was still speaking, some people came from the leader&rsquo;s house to say, &ldquo;Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the teacher any further?&rdquo; </span>36<span style="line-height: 1.3;">But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the leader of the synagogue, &ldquo;Do not fear, only believe.&rdquo; </span>37<span style="line-height: 1.3;">He allowed no one to follow him except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James. </span>38<span style="line-height: 1.3;">When they came to the house of the leader of the synagogue, he saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. </span>39<span style="line-height: 1.3;">When he had entered, he said to them, &ldquo;Why do you make a commotion and weep? The child is not dead but sleeping.&rdquo; </span>40<span style="line-height: 1.3;">And they laughed at him. Then he put them all outside, and took the child&rsquo;s father and mother and those who were with him, and went in where the child was. </span>41<span style="line-height: 1.3;">He took her by the hand and said to her, &ldquo;Talitha cum,&rdquo; which means, &ldquo;Little girl, get up!&rdquo; </span>42<span style="line-height: 1.3;">And immediately the girl got up and began to walk about (she was twelve years of age). At this they were overcome with amazement. </span>43<span style="line-height: 1.3;">He strictly ordered them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat. <p>1But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb, taking the spices that they had prepared. 2They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3but when they went in, they did not find the body. 4While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men in dazzling clothes stood beside them. 5The women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, &ldquo;Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen. 6Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, 7that the Son of Man must be handed over to sinners, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again.&rdquo; 8Then they remembered his words, 9and returning from the tomb, they told all this to the eleven and to all the rest. 10Now it was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them who told this to the apostles. 11But these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them. 12But Peter got up and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; then he went home, amazed at what had happened.&nbsp;</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>28 After this, when Jesus knew that all was now finished, he said (in order to fulfill the scripture), &ldquo;I am thirsty.&rdquo; 29 A jar full of sour wine was standing there. So they put a sponge full of the wine on a branch of hyssop and held it to his mouth. 30 When Jesus had received the wine, he said, &ldquo;It is finished.&rdquo; Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.</p>
<p>&nbsp;31<span style="line-height: 1.3;"> Since it was the day of Preparation, the Jews did not want the bodies left on the cross during the sabbath, especially because that sabbath was a day of great solemnity. So they asked Pilate to have the legs of the crucified men broken and the bodies removed. </span>32<span style="line-height: 1.3;"> Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who had been crucified with him. </span>33<span style="line-height: 1.3;"> But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. </span>34<span style="line-height: 1.3;"> Instead, one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once blood and water came out. </span>35<span style="line-height: 1.3;"> (He who saw this has testified so that you also may believe. His testimony is true, and he knows that he tells the truth.) </span>36<span style="line-height: 1.3;"> These things occurred so that the scripture might be fulfilled, &ldquo;None of his bones shall be broken.&rdquo; </span>37<span style="line-height: 1.3;"> And again another passage of scripture says, &ldquo;They will look on the one whom they have pierced.&rdquo;</span></p>

<p>A Prayer of Moses, the man of God.</p>
<p>1&nbsp;Lord, you have been our dwelling place<br /> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;in all generations.</p>
<p>2&nbsp;Before the mountains were brought forth,<br /> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;or ever you had formed the earth and the world,<br /> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;from everlasting to everlasting you are God.</p>
<p>3&nbsp;You turn us back to dust,<br /> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and say, &ldquo;Turn back, you mortals.&rdquo;</p>
<p>4&nbsp;For a thousand years in your sight<br /> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;are like yesterday when it is past,<br /> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;or like a watch in the night.</p>
<p>5&nbsp;You sweep them away; they are like a dream,<br /> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;like grass that is renewed in the morning;</p>
<p>6&nbsp;in the morning it flourishes and is renewed;<br /> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;in the evening it fades and withers.</p>
<p>7&nbsp;For we are consumed by your anger;<br /> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;by your wrath we are overwhelmed.</p>
<p>8&nbsp;You have set our iniquities before you,<br /> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;our secret sins in the light of your countenance.</p>
<p>9&nbsp;For all our days pass away under your wrath;<br /> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;our years come to an end like a sigh.</p>
<p>10&nbsp;The days of our life are seventy years,<br /> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;	or perhaps eighty, if we are strong;<br /> even then their span is only toil and trouble;<br /> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;	they are soon gone, and we fly away.</p>
<p>11&nbsp;Who considers the power of your anger?<br /> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;	Your wrath is as great as the fear that is due you.</p>
<p>12&nbsp;So teach us to count our days<br /> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;	that we may gain a wise heart.</p>
<p>13&nbsp;Turn, O Lord! How long?<br /> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;	Have compassion on your servants!</p>
<p>14&nbsp;Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love,<br /> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;	so that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.</p>
<p>15&nbsp;Make us glad as many days as you have afflicted us,<br /> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;	and as many years as we have seen evil.</p>
<p>16&nbsp;Let your work be manifest to your servants,<br /> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;	and your glorious power to their children.</p>

He said, &ldquo;It is better for me to die than to live.&rdquo; </span>9<span style="line-height: 1.3;">But God said to Jonah, &ldquo;Is it right for you to be angry about the bush?&rdquo; And he said, &ldquo;Yes, angry enough to die.&rdquo; </span>10<span style="line-height: 1.3;">Then the Lord said, &ldquo;You are concerned about the bush, for which you did not labor and which you did not grow; it came into being in a night and perished in a night. </span>11<span style="line-height: 1.3;">And should I not be concerned about Nineveh, that great city, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand persons who do not know their right hand from their left, and also many animals?&rdquo;</span></p>

<p>3:1The word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time, saying, 2&ldquo;Get up, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you.&rdquo; 3So Jonah set out and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large city, a three days&rsquo; walk across. 4Jonah began to go into the city, going a day&rsquo;s walk. And he cried out, &ldquo;Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!&rdquo;</p>
<p>&nbsp;5<span style="line-height: 1.3;">And the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and everyone, great and small, put on sackcloth. </span>6<span style="line-height: 1.3;">When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, removed his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. </span>7<span style="line-height: 1.3;">Then he had a proclamation made in Nineveh: &ldquo;By the decree of the king and his nobles: No human being or animal, no herd or flock, shall taste anything. They shall not feed, nor shall they drink water. </span>8<span style="line-height: 1.3;">Human beings and animals shall be covered with sackcloth, and they shall cry mightily to God. All shall turn from their evil ways and from the violence that is in their hands. </span>9<span style="line-height: 1.3;">Who knows? God may relent and change his mind; he may turn from his fierce anger, so that we do not perish.&rdquo; </span>10<span style="line-height: 1.3;">When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil ways, God changed his mind about the calamity that he had said he would bring upon them; and he did not do it.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;4:1<span style="line-height: 1.3;">But this was very displeasing to Jonah, and he became angry. </span>2<span style="line-height: 1.3;">He prayed to the Lord and said, &ldquo;O Lord! Is not this what I said while I was still in my own country? That is why I fled to Tarshish at the beginning; for I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love, and ready to relent from punishing. </span>3<span style="line-height: 1.3;">And now, O Lord, please take my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live.&rdquo;</span></p>

I went down to the land whose bars closed upon me forever; yet you brought up my life from the Pit, O Lord my God. 7As my life was ebbing away, I remembered the Lord; and my prayer came to you, into your holy temple. 8Those who worship vain idols forsake their true loyalty. 9But I with the voice of thanksgiving will sacrifice to you; what I have vowed I will pay. Deliverance belongs to the Lord!&rdquo;</p>

<p>4But the Lord hurled a great wind upon the sea, and such a mighty storm came upon the sea that the ship threatened to break up. 5Then the mariners were afraid, and each cried to his god. They threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea, to lighten it for them. Jonah, meanwhile, had gone down into the hold of the ship and had lain down, and was fast asleep. 6The captain came and said to him, &ldquo;What are you doing sound asleep? Get up, call on your god! Perhaps the god will spare us a thought so that we do not perish.&rdquo; 7The sailors said to one another, &ldquo;Come, let us cast lots, so that we may know on whose account this calamity has come upon us.&rdquo; So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah. 8Then they said to him, &ldquo;Tell us why this calamity has come upon us. And of what people are you?&rdquo; 9&ldquo;I am a Hebrew,&rdquo; he replied. &ldquo;I worship the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.&rdquo; 10Then the men were even more afraid, and said to him, &ldquo;What is this that you have done!&rdquo; For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the Lord, because he had told them so.</p>
<p>11<span style="line-height: 1.3;">Then they said to him, &ldquo;What shall we do to you, that the sea may quiet down for us?&rdquo; For the sea was growing more and more tempestuous. </span>12<span style="line-height: 1.3;">He said to them, &ldquo;Pick me up and throw me into the sea; then the sea will quiet down for you; for I know it is because of me that this great storm has come upon you.&rdquo; </span>13<span style="line-height: 1.3;">Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring the ship back to land, but they could not, for the sea grew more and more stormy against them. </span>14<span style="line-height: 1.3;">Then they cried out to the Lord, &ldquo;Please, O Lord, we pray, do not let us perish on account of this man&rsquo;s life. Do not make us guilty of innocent blood; for you, O Lord, have done as it pleased you.&rdquo; </span>15<span style="line-height: 1.3;">So they picked Jonah up and threw him into the sea; and the sea ceased from its raging. </span>16<span style="line-height: 1.3;">Then the men feared the Lord even more, and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows. 17But the Lord provided a large fish to swallow up Jonah; and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights."</span></p>

<p>22When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord&nbsp;23(as it is written in the law of the Lord, &ldquo;Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord&rdquo;),&nbsp;24and they offered a sacrifice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, &ldquo;a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.&rdquo;</p>
<p>&nbsp;25Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him.26It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord&rsquo;s Messiah.&nbsp;27Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law,28Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying,&nbsp;</p>
<p>29&ldquo;Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace,</p>

<p>31which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples,&nbsp;</p>
<p>32a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.&rdquo;&nbsp;</p>
<p>33And the child&rsquo;s father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him.&nbsp;34Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, &ldquo;This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed&nbsp;35so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed&mdash;and a sword will pierce your own soul too.&rdquo;&nbsp;36There was also a prophet, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, having lived with her husband seven years after her marriage,&nbsp;37then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped there with fasting and prayer night and day.&nbsp;38At that moment she came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem."</p>

<p>&nbsp;18Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. 19Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. 20But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, &ldquo;Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.&rdquo; 22All this took place to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: 23&ldquo;Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,&rdquo; which means, &ldquo;God is with us.&rdquo; 24When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took her as his wife, 25but had no marital relations with her until she had borne a son; and he named him Jesus.</p>

<div>
<p>1In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered.&nbsp;2&nbsp;This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria.&nbsp;3&nbsp;All went to their own towns to be registered.&nbsp;4&nbsp;Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David.&nbsp;5&nbsp;He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child.&nbsp;6&nbsp;While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child.&nbsp;7&nbsp;And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.</p>
<p>8&nbsp;In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night.&nbsp;9&nbsp;Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.&nbsp;10&nbsp;But the angel said to them, &ldquo;Do not be afraid; for see&mdash;I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people:&nbsp;11&nbsp;to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah,&nbsp;the Lord.&nbsp;12&nbsp;This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.&rdquo;&nbsp;13&nbsp;And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host,&nbsp;praising God and saying,</p>
<div>
<p>14&nbsp;&ldquo;Glory to God in the highest heaven,<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and on earth peace among those whom he favors!&rdquo;</p>
</div>
<p>15&nbsp;When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, &ldquo;Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.&rdquo;&nbsp;16&nbsp;So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger.&nbsp;17&nbsp;When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child;&nbsp;18&nbsp;and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them.19&nbsp;But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart.&nbsp;20&nbsp;The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.</p>
