Compassion

1The spirit of the Lord God is upon me,
because the Lord has anointed me;
he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed,
to bind up the broken-hearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
and release to the prisoners;
2 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor,
and the day of vengeance of our God;
to comfort all who mourn;
3 to provide for those who mourn in Zion—
to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning,
the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit.
They will be called oaks of righteousness,
the planting of the Lord, to display his glory (Is.61:1-3).

liberti summer internship - Click here for details on how to apply for our summer internship for college students, which will run from June 1st - July 28th, 2013.

host a summer intern - We have summer interns this year in June and July and we need families that are able to host our interns! This is a wonderful opportunity to invest in the lives of college kids who are here in the City to love those in need.

As a host, you will NOT be responsible for buying food or cooking meals for your intern, although you can share food together if you agree to that (see house covenant below).  In fact, the interns will probably be on the run a lot and given free meals at various times.  They will also be given a monthly stipend, which will cover transportation and food costs so they don't have to spend their own money.

The things you will be responsible for are the following:

  • Housing them in a room, free of charge.
  • Creating a written living agreement/house covenant that you all sign, which states how you intend to live together and covers things like food, guests, cleaning, etc...whatever is helpful to each household (I'll send an example in a follow-up email of one Alan and I wrote for the students living with us)
  • Developing a relationship with your intern in some manner (not just co-existing in the house together).  We suggest that this includes at least one weekly meal together on an agreed upon day, but it can include other more flexible things of your choosing, like praying together, asking them about their experiences, going to church together, etc.
  • Being around the house a "fair" amount.  We won't expect you to be there all the time (and your intern will probably be gone a lot anyway), but we don't want interns to live in a house where they rarely see their hosts.  If you are going away for a weekend or extended period of time, we just need you to communicate that to him/her.

Contact: Email Vito Baldini if you're interested in hosting: vito@liberti.org.

liberti easter outreach 2013 - We would like to thank everyone who came out and helped deliver meals this past Saturday - we serviced over 2,000 families! This effort took over 150 people last week packing up meals and over 300 delivering this weekend. We gave away meals to families in Harrisburg, Philadelphia, Norristown, Chester, and Camden, NJ. We also raised $65,000 and will be digging 3 wells in Southern Sudan, Africa with Water is Basic: www.waterisbasic.org. Be on the lookout in the next few weeks to see some driver stories and pictures from distribution day, and check out our CBS footage on our website: www.libertieasteroutreach.com.

My Brother’s House - Safe Haven for 20 formerly homeless men with substance abuse problems. We hold a bible study with the men every Monday at 10am. If you would like to join us email Vito Baldini at: vito@liberti.org. Location: 609 South 15th Street.

Sanctuary - Transitional supportive housing community for 16 formerly homeless men in recovery. Bethesda Project "Sanctuary" is held every 3rd Sunday from 11:30-1:30 pm. This is a time of serving and visiting with the Sanctuary guys. It's a laid-back, fun time that blesses us just as much as the men. To get involved email Krista Dedrick at: kristadedrick@gmail.com. Location: 816 South 20th Street.

Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility- CFCF is the largest facility in the Philadelphia Prison System, with the capacity to serve 40,000 meals daily to inmates, corrections officers, and staff. The prison also serves as a 24-hour intake center for adult males with lineups, public defender meetings, and bail hearings all taking place onsite. On the third Sunday night of every month, liberti leads teams of 5-10 men and women to spend about two hours in a service for the men. The time is uniquely structured to involve singing and praise (mainly led by the inmates themselves), sharing personal stories of faith (testimonies), and an interactive sermon. The prison is located in Northeast Philadelphia about 15 minutes from center city (you don't need a car, we'll ride together). You don't have to go to the prison to be a part of serving in this ministry; there are opportunities to pray, plan, write, and give too. To get involved, contact Joseph Yasso at least 10 days prior to the next date at joseph.yasso@gmail.com. For more details, feel free to contact Joseph anytime!

Emmanuel Community Ministries- liberti helps First Baptist Church reach out to our homeless brothers and sisters in center city every 2nd & 4th Saturday from 10am-4pm (we work in two shifts: 10am-1pm and 1pm-4:30pm). They offer a time of devotion, giving thanks, and a safe environment for expressing special needs and requests. They provide a cooked meal, clothing, shoes, movie time and much-needed relaxation time away from some of the needs and hardships that they face daily. We attempt to give our friends and guests the reassurance that comes with belonging to a larger community. If you would like volunteer contact  Austin Gee at: austin.m.gee@gmail.com. Location: First Baptist Church at 17th & Sansom.

Community Outreach Ministry - If you would be willing to follow up with some of the families that were visited during the Easter Outreach 2013, please contact Ashley Bruce at ashleyabruce@gmail.com.

Small Fry - Teaching kids and their families in our urban communities the value of nutrition by using locally sourced items which are affordable and convenient to cook and prepare snacks and meals. While supplementing healthy meals in our schools and other programs is great, we feel giving our kids (and their families) a wide array of tools and skills will equip them and teach them how to make healthy choices consistently.

Typical Lesson:

Introduction and Name Game, Lesson on Food Group or Preparation Style, Prepare snack or Meal, While it cooks we play a game reviewing everything we learned during the practical period, Make recipe cards, Eat!

We meet every Saturday at 11:00am | At the Marian Anderson Rec Center (17th & Fitzwater Streets) we'll be meeting to discuss Background Checks (bring ID with you), the Small Fry strategy for 2013, partnering with Arts & Crafts, communications with the kids and families, board recommendations, status updates and the vision for Small Fry. Please join us!!

NEED: we are in need of someone who is administratively gifted who is willing to donate their time to organize class lists, invites and coordinate with the Rec Centers.

For more info, or to sign up, email Alissa.

Kids' Carnival - Please join us for the Kids' Carnival on Saturday, May 4th, 2:00pm - 6:00pm. More details here.
